Horn

The horn is your go-time signal out in the lineup:

  • One blast = Heat starts
  • Two blasts = Heat’s over

In the case of a strong wind making it difficult to hear the horn, keep an eye on the timing disk for your indicator of heat start and end.

When things get serious

Surf comps are all about fun, but safety always comes first. If something dangerous happens (or even might happen), officials can stop a heat immediately.

Here’s how that plays out:

  • The Head Judge calls the stop
  • The announcer lets everyone know what’s going on
  • You’ll hear continuous horn blasts (not just one or two—this is your clear signal something’s up)
  • The heat timer is paused and timing disk sits in neutral position

If you hear that continuous horn, don’t hesitate—head in and wait for further instructions.
