Empowering Passionate Surfers to Inspire Others
Surfing England, the governing body for surfing in England, is excited to announce the launch of a new Surf Instructor Award.
Working on the beach, teaching people to ride their first waves and sharing the stoke of surfing could be one of the best jobs there is. For anyone wanting to take their first step into surf coaching, this is the training programme and award certification they need. Covering all the fundamentals in theory and practice, they will leave the course qualified and ready to work at a surf school delivering beginner lessons and sharing their love of surfing.
The new qualification is delivered through digital, classroom and on-the-beach training. Much of the theory can be learnt through new online modules and taken anytime. The practical hands-on training and mentoring is delivered by some of England’s most experienced coaches at beaches across the country who have undertaken training to become a Surfing England Trainer Assessor.
The coaching award breaks new ground not just in its blended format, but also in its content, with key themes like Equality, Diversity and Inclusion running through the whole programme. It is essential all new instructors are equipped with the skills and knowledge to make surfing inclusive and welcoming to all.
As part of Surfing England’s commitment to diversity and welcoming more people from a wider mix of backgrounds into coaching, there is also funding and support available to anyone from a minority background wishing to break boundaries and become a surf instructor. You can find out more about this in the surf coach page.
This Award is the first of many being developed by Surfing England as they progress the sport of surfing and open up a more comprehensive pathway for surf instructors and coaches. It’s good to know that as a 100% not-for-profit, all funds raised through the training awards goes straight back into the surfing community.
