NORTH DEVON SCHOOLS SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS presented by The Ilfracombe Academy at GOLDCOAST OCEANFEST 2013
For the 9th year running, young surfers from schools throughout North Devon will descend upon Croyde Bay to take part in this entertaining and passionate surf contest, held as part of the schools day at Goldcoast Oceanfest 2013!
Jobe Harriss gets an Epic 10 at last years ND Schools
Following on from the successes of last year but not forgetting its testing conditions, contest organisers at Surfing GB having placed a large order of tropical sunshine/ pumping waves and are hoping it is delivered on time and throughout the weekend of the festival.
The recipe of surf and music has always been greatly recognised, but the exceptional atmosphere created on the schools day at Goldcoast Oceanfest is unique. It allows for the participants compete in a friendly/safe environment where team work and healthy competition is encouraged as musical brilliance filters around the bay. If the pumping waves (fingers crossed) aren’t enough of a distraction, the contest is overlooked by the fully licensed oceanside GoldCoast Arena hosting the Live Music Stage and 2 big screens showcasing the international and local musical talents of more than 20 live acts over the weekend. 2013 will see Bastille headline Saturday, supported by a big Oceanfest favourite Gabrielle Aplin. Iconic Australian Xavier Rudd headlines Friday night and is supported by the brilliant Willy Mason. Past performers include Brit Award winners Ben Howard and Ed Sheeran plus Newton Faulkner, Seasick Steve, Jason Mraz, Donny Frankenreiter to name a few.
Surfers from the North Devon schools of Braunton, Pilton, Park, Great Torrington, West Buckland, Kingsley and The Ilfracombe Academy will battle for individual and team glory. Under 16 & 14’s boys and girls Shortboard divisions are open for entry as well as an under 16’s Longboard open and a team tag team event!
In their 6th year of support, the event is once again presented by The Ilfracombe Academy whom actively seek to enhance these opportunities for young athletes to perform and have enabled a successful recipe of Surfing GB and supporters to assist in the operation of this fantastic event. ‘Grass roots is where the future of Surfing lies, whether in competition or just participation we recognise the importance of events like these and are stoked to be able to hold it at such an great festival’ says Surfing GB’s Project Manager Nick Rees. Sharing in the excitement of this contest are POSCA and Rip Curl and who have kindly offered their support.
