So what does a beach marshal actually do?
Think of them as the glue between competitors, officials, and the flow of the event. They handle check-ins, make sure surfers are where they need to be when they need to be there, and keep surfers informed of any changes. In a sport where you can’t pause the ocean, that’s a big deal.
They’ll typically:
All while juggling radios, clipboards, and a steady stream of questions from slightly nervous (or very stoked) surfers.
Why is that so important?
Waves shift, wind changes, heats get adjusted. Without someone on the ground keeping everyone in sync, you’d get missed heats, confusion, and plenty of frustration.
They’re also a quiet calming presence—especially for younger surfers—helping explain what’s happening and keeping things moving without stress.
