Judging Criteria – SUP

Judges want to see you take charge of the wave—using your paddle, positioning, and timing to perform powerful, progressive manoeuvres in the most critical sections. The surfers who stand out are the ones combining innovation with control, while linking major turns seamlessly from start to finish.

Here’s what judges are watching for:

Radical controlled manoeuvres – Powerful, committed turns performed with precision and control
Critical section surfing – Taking on the steepest, most powerful part of the wave
Speed, power & flow – Generating and maintaining momentum while linking manoeuvres smoothly
Innovation & progression – Pushing boundaries with modern, progressive SUP surfing
Variety & combination – Mixing major manoeuvres together in a fluid, connected way
Use of the paddle – Enhancing leverage, drive, and creativity to execute more radical moves
Commitment & difficulty – Taking risks and performing at a high level in demanding sections
Control – Clean execution from start to finish, even in critical situations

What do the scores mean?

Each wave is scored from 0 to 10:

0.1 – 1.9 → Poor
2.0 – 3.9 → Fair
4.0 – 5.9 → Average
6.0 – 7.9 → Good
8.0 – 10.0 → Excellent

The more you combine power, progression, and control—while using the paddle to elevate your performance—the higher your score will climb.

How heats are decided

In a standard knockout format:

  • Your top 2 waves are added together to give your total heat score
  • Heats usually have up to 4 surfers (sometimes 5)
  • The top 2 surfers progress through to the next round

It’s all about quality over quantity—choose the right waves, commit to your manoeuvres, and use every tool (including the paddle) to stand out.
