Junior Surf Series – Porthtowan (26th July) Cancelled Due to Forecast Conditions
Following careful review of the latest weather and surf forecasts, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Junior Surf Series event scheduled for Sunday 26th July. While we aim to provide as many competition opportunities as possible for our junior surfers, the safety of competitors is our primary consideration.
This decision has not been taken lightly. Over the past few days, we have been closely monitoring the forecast and consulting with our Contest Director, Head Judge, Lifeguards, and local host surf clubs, whose local knowledge and experience of the beaches and conditions are invaluable when making decisions like this. We thank our local hosts St Agnes Surf Lifesaving Club and Porthtowan Surf Lifesaving Club for their invaluable support and dedication to the event.
The latest forecast for Porthtowan is currently predicting 4–6ft swell with WNW NW winds gusting around 30mph. Based on the forecast available to us at this time, and the expected conditions throughout the day, we do not believe it is safe or appropriate to run a full day’s competition for our junior surfers.
We appreciate that forecasts can change, and unfortunately, we can only make our decision based on the most accurate and up-to-date information available at the time. We have set deadlines for Event Calls which are the same across our full Events program.
We have explored every possible option to enable the event to go ahead, including discussions around alternative venues. However, after careful consideration, we concluded that none of the available options would provide the safe, fair and contestable conditions that our Junior Surf Series aims to deliver.
The safety and wellbeing of our competitors will always be our highest priority. While we know this news will be disappointing, we hope everyone understands that these decisions are made with the best interests of our young surfers in mind and are based on both the forecast and extensive local knowledge of the conditions. While we are all collectively disappointed to cancel, the bottom line is safety is paramount and we thank you for your support and understanding.
We will be in contact next week regarding refunds and look forward to welcoming everyone to the next Junior Surf Series stop at Bude. We are also working hard behind the scenes to secure another date with Croyde Surf Club. Availability is limited in September as we also need to allow ample time for wildcard applications and selections for National Titles at The Wave – a reminder of qualification information here.
