Location: Surfing England Office – Braunton, North Devon.

Hours: Full time (Part time will be considered)

Salary: £25,000 basic with performance based progression

Employment type: 12 months initial contract, view to permanent .

There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in English surfing.  A vibrant and exciting club scene, artificial waves being rolled out in major cities, record levels of participation and some amazing talent coming through the competitive ranks.  Alongside the sporting potential of surfing, it is also being recognised as a fantastic tool for positive social change, with many of our clubs & schools involved in amazing projects, from overcoming the barriers to get teenage girls involved in sport to providing mental health support for the blue light emergency services.

Surfing England is the sport’s National Governing Body (NGB) as recognised by Sport England and we look after the sport from grass roots through to Team England.  At the heart of what we do, is serving and supporting our membership of surfers, surf coaches, clubs and schools.

This role will be focused on growing our individual membership, aiming for 10,000 members over the next 3 years, leveraging our social media platforms, commercial partners and network of surf schools and coaches to do so.

We’re looking for someone who has lots of energy, loves working as part of a small team and enjoys taking the initiative to try new ideas and make things happen.   They will be a great communicator who enjoys selling the Surfing England vision, bringing new partners on board and delivering an amazing membership offer.

Whoever takes the role will also be naturally organised, with good admin and customer service skills.  They will be tech proficient, keen to use and further develop our wordpress based membership system and our other digital tools, in particular canva and mailchimp.  They will enjoy and embrace social media, with Instagram and Facebook being key tools for promoting our membership offer, it’s important they enjoy using and understand social media.

Key Responsibilities

To grow the Surfing England individual membership to 10,000 members.  This will include:

  • Looking after our existing membership and responding to enquiries in a timely and professional manner
  • Managing our bespoke online membership database, maintaining customer records, monthly reporting and liaising with the wider team
  • Developing and then delivering sales strategies to significantly grow our membership numbers
  • Working closely with key commercial partners to develop membership offers which complement our sponsor and partnership objectives
  • Using social media to deliver core Surfing England messaging and creating new content to retain and drive membership
  • Being a key member of the Surfing England team, supporting the overall objectives of the organisation. This will include attending our Junior Surf Series, getting to know our members and clubs in person.

As part of a small, dynamic team in a fast moving environment the membership lead will also be expected to support the team in other areas as new challenges arise.  This ensures a variety of work is available, but requires an individual that is adaptable and open to new challenges.

The role will report to Community and Membership Manager and is predominantly office based, working from our HQ in Braunton, North Devon.  There will be occasional requirements to travel and to work outside of office hours.

Successful applicants will ideally have:

  • Excellent organisation skills. You’ll be a great administrator, able to quickly learn and master new platforms (especially wordpress!)
  • Positive attitude toward customers and a natural drive to exceed customer expectations
  • An affinity for social media – our main shop window for membership sales, enjoying using social media to connect with the surfing community, creating content and understanding trends and opportunities will be essential
  • A vision for growing our membership – you’ll have ideas and vision, feeding into our overall membership strategy.
  • A desire to make the role your own, becoming an integral part of the Surfing England team
  • Proactive ‘can do’ attitude and ability to manage own work load and prioritise effectively
  • Bags of enthusiasm and genuine passion for surfing and for using surfing as a tool for positive change
