Junior Surf series day of champions

Junior Surf series day of champions

Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural celebration of the Surfing England Junior Surf series (U12’s and U14’s), the winners of the various categories over the course of the four event series met at the Wave near Bristol on a beautiful crisp autumn morning for a day of celebration along with four top surfers who were acting in the role of team captain.  Great to have surfers from all around Britain as well as the Irish contingent who have supported the event so well throughout the year.

Team captains for the day were Barnaby Cox (Blue team), Ellie Turner (Yellow team), Emily Currie (Red team) and Will Bailey (Green team), and the Surfing England juniors head coach Beau Bromham designed a great format for the day which meant that each of the teams had one under 12 boy and girl, and one under 14 boy and girl,  these names were drawn out of a hat which gave an exciting start to the day.

After the traditional team photos and brief warmup it was time to get into the wave pool with 10 surfers on each side mixed in amongst the public sessions.

The day was not about competition, and before the first session each of the competitors sat down with the team captain to go through things that would like to improve on during the day, and following the first session this was reviewed with a new action plan for the afternoon’s session which got underway at 2 pm. Each surfer surfed an hour of the right, an hour of the left and following this was the presentation of the teams outside next to the lake itself.

There were no winning teams as everybody had done so well to get there, however there was one surfer from each team that was awarded just a small prize depending on the thoughts of the team captain. Each surfer and the team captains were given an animal beanie, and the four winners were also given some fins from RYD.

It was lovely to celebrate the athletes in the sunshine along with their families, friends’ parents and guardians and also lovely to celebrate Reuben Wakeley’s birthday.

Any event like this couldn’t happen without the help of the sponsors and a massive thank you to Animal UK, EOLA and RYD, who have supported this series of events throughout the year, and obviously also a big thank you to the Wave for hosting the event and making us feel so welcome. A big thanks for Sam Heapy who was working on the video edit, and also for Rob Tibbles from a photo perspective.

Following the presentation all of the surfers were then invited to go and look at the video analysis and fair to say each of the surfers took away some great hints for the future to cap off a really enjoyable day.

On behalf of Surfing England Phil Williams lead co-ordinator for the series said, ‘It’s been another remarkable year for the series with even more surfers in this age groups wanting to compete, and  especially good to see a whole new generation of young girls competing. I want to thank all those involved in this series, in particular the surfers themselves, their support crew, sponsors, the Surfing England Team (Especially Lenka & Ben) and of course the five surf clubs that we worked with throughout this year, which were Croyde surf club, Bude waveriders, Newquay boardriders, Global boarders and even though the conditions were flat for the event a big thank you to Tynemouth surf co in the north east , we will get an event run there next year I’m convinced of that’

Plans are already underway for next year and we look forward to announcing these as things progress in 2024. Thank you once again for everybody support in what has been another epic season for the under 12’s and under 14’s in these events!
