An essential part of the delivery of the 2023 Muscle Food English Adaptive Surfing Open are a team of brilliant volunteers. As part of delivering a great event on the beach, we recognise the importance of offering training opportunities for volunteers. Ian Bennett, Team England Para coach and Wave Project Adaptive Lead will be delivering a course on Wednesday 20th September.
The training will give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become a valuable member of our team when supporting surfers with greater needs due to a disability. This training is co-written by Wave Project and Surfing England.
The day will be split into two sessions; the morning will include but won’t be limited to the theory around positive language; communication skills; considering barriers to surfing and how we can overcome them. We will stop for lunch (approx. 30-minute).
In the afternoon we will build practical skills, including transferring; surfing with a visual impairment and safe large/seated board surfing practices. The course will be tailored to be more appropriate for the competition that takes place on Thursday 21st – Friday 22nd September.
By signing up to take the course, you and confirming you will be able to volunteer at the event for a minimum of one day. Please also complete the volunteer registration form so we have all required information.
