Contest organisers have taken the decision to postpone this weekend’s Rip Curl Grom Search to the 12th – 13th June at Watergate Bay, Cornwall.
With a huge swell forecast to hit Cornish shores on Friday, and another large swell coming in on Sunday, chunky conditions and strong winds are in abundance this weekend, making this Rip Curl Grom Search (junior surfing) contest too risky to run.
This decision has been made in consultation with ERA Adventures who are providing water safety cover who state “ERA recommend postponing this weekend’s surf competition, due to very big swell hitting Friday. Saturday is smaller but 20mph NW winds and 5ft at 10 seconds which could offer a very small window. Sunday the conditions are too dangerous at 9ft at 10 seconds with a 30mph Westerly wind. Our concern is that the sea state will be dangerous for a Grom competitions, and the very short window on Saturday afternoon that is borderline, could close over”.
The Rip Curl Grom Search contest is all about searching the planet for the best groms, and we have two full days of competitive surfing action to fulfil. By postponing the contest, we really hope to see favourable conditions on the 12th – 13th June, to enable a fun weekend on the beach for all competing surfers in the U12s, U14s and U16s.
We aim to give the Groms the best opportunity to showcase their surfing, including for those U12s who are entering the world of competitive surfing for the first time up to the U16s who are chasing a little more bite in the waves!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SURFERS:
All surfers who have confirmed places to compete will have these places automatically reallocated to the 12th – 13th June.
If you cannot make the 12th – 13th June and wish to cancel your place and request a refund, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to inform Surfing England of this decision by Monday 31st May.
A reserve list is currently in operation for the U14 boys so if spaces become available you will be contacted. If spaces become available in other divisions, contest organisers will consider reopening the entries to fill the event to capacity.
A further thank you to ERA Adventures who will provide water safety cover at the event.
