2019 English Adaptive Surfing Open announced

2019 English Adaptive Surfing Open

June 29th – 30th 2019: Fistral Beach, Cornwall

Surfing England, its partners and sponsors are proud to bring you our 2019 English Adaptive Surfing Open. Following on from the success of last years’ sensational second event (link to report here) we welcome all adaptive surfers & volunteers to Fistral Beach, Cornwall on Saturday 29th June 2019 (entries & surf conditions dependent, the event will run on Sunday 30th June). Organisers also invite Surfing England Affiliated Surf Clubs and Accredited Surf Schools/Coaches to an introductory adaptive experience, with professional training, coaching and workshops designed to provide & improve the adaptive surfing experience, opportunity & inclusivity in our community. Click here to register.

The event comes at a significant time with the continued development of our English adaptive surfing programme & in line with the global momentum for the discipline, including the ISA World Adaptive Surfing Games.

The event will see adaptive surfers united in a common love for surfing. They will have the chance of taking open & national surfing titles, whilst having fun & competing against their peers, in divisions identified by their surfing functional ability; Assisted; Prone; Sitting/Kneeling; Standing, Men’s Open & Women’s Open.

We are interested to hear from Visually Impaired/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing surfers who may wish to get involved and compete. Our aim is to have a minimum of 3 persons in each division for it to run. If you are interested or would like to discuss this further, please email hannah@surfingengland.org

Surfing England aim to raise the profile & opportunity for adaptive surfing & build on the important work being done by many surfing organisations across the world.  Surfing England see Adaptive Surfing as an integral part of a ‘Healthy Surfing Community’, an area that they want to celebrate and grow.

The criteria for surfers to participate can be seen here: CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA

If a surfer has any query over eligibility to participate please contact us & detail your case for entry. This will be reviewed by the entry committee: Send to hannah@surfingengland.org

BEACH INFORMATION

Fistral Beach is one of England’s premier surf spots & is part of the town of Newquay, Cornwall. The beach has great accessibility – we will have a disabled toilet on-site specifically for competitors. There will be beach wheelchairs for competitors to use & volunteers assisting where required. There are food & beverage facilities close to the site & a water refill station. The core of the event site will be built on the tarmac carpark overlooking the beach.

For Accessible Accommodation in the Newquay area, please use websites such as Air BNB and Booking.com & select the Accessibility Filters.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Surfers are expected to use the correct equipment (including surfboard and wetsuit), and we will use the ISA rules and ISA Adaptive Rules as guidelines for this event. Wave Skis are permitted in the sitting & assisted divisions only – please notify event organisers if you intend to use a Wave ski. If a surfer is unsure on the eligibility of their equipment, please contact the event organisers. Please note Surfing England’s aims for this event are to see as many Adaptive Surfers enjoying the ocean as possible and we strive to remove barriers blocking access to the sport and increase participation.

A judging talk will be given to all competitors on the day & in advance of competition starting. Running orders & plans will be confirmed in the week before the event. We are hoping to run the volunteer training opportunity throughout the 1st day morning & surfing competition throughout the afternoon & possibly Sunday, but this is subject to change.

The judging criteria is taken from the ISA Adaptive Rulebook which can be seen below.

Surfers interested in joining our English Adaptive Team programme to compete at European or World Adaptive should register their interest with programme manager Andy Joyce via: adaptiveteam@surfingengland.org. Eligibility policy for England can be viewed below.
