Team England Surfers Announced for the 2020 British Surfing Championships & British Cup

We were stoked to run the 2020 MVMT English National U18 & Open Shortboard Championships, supported by Caravan and Motorhome Club in mid-March, just before lockdown got real.

This Event was new for Surfing England for 2020, and one put in place to select the surfers who will compete at the 2020 British Surfing Championships & British Cup (currently postponed – due to be held in Thurso, Scotland, hosted by the Scottish Surfing Federation). At this event, the Top 3 Men and Women will take places on a British Team, as they compete next at the 2020 ISA Worlds (postponed), with the ultimate goal to make the Olympics (postponed to 2021). The event was highly competitive and saw an excellent standard of surfing. When it came down to the boil, here are the successful surfers.

A huge congratulations to all surfers for earning those sought-after places. All of Surfing England are proud to have such a strong team who we believe will perform exceptionally. To read the full Event Format and Selection Policy, click here.

We must also acknowledge that 2020 is not a straightforward year. With the coronavirus pandemic impacting the whole surfing industry, this has led to the 2020 British Champs currently being postponed (click here), as are the 2020 ISA World Games (click here). The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have also been postponed to Summer 2021.

We are waiting for more information to become available from BSURF / British Surfing / ISA and the International Olympic Committee on the rules for qualification events following the postponements. As such, we must caveat that the selection may be subject to change. We are in unprecedented times and may have to adapt further if event postponements turn into cancellations and the pathway to the 2020 Olympics (to be held in 2021) evolves.

As always, Surfing England’s firm priority remains to strive for the best outcome for Team England surfers, and to support our surfer’s onward ambitions to compete as part of a English or British Team on the World Stage.

We will communicate further information as it becomes available. Congratulations once again to all the surfers!
