Pop Up

Learning to pop up effectively will help you catch more waves and put you in the right stance and position on your board to surf those waves.

Louis, head instructor from Tynemouth Surf School will walk you through the basic pop up for beginners.  Masting your pop up technique will enable you to get up on your feet smoothly and confidently.

The very best way to get your pop up in shape is to have a lesson with a qualified surf instructor.  They can get most people to their feet in their first lesson, and they’ll set you on the right course to keep progressing and learning.

Our Top Tips

  • Make sure you’re on the right board! As a beginner, opt for a larger, more stable board – ideally a soft top
  • Warm-up and stretch.  We always recommend a gentle warm up, loosening up muscles and helping to prevent injury
  • Practice on the sand first, only take to the water once your confident in the flow of movements
  • Head to the black and white flags on life guarded beaches.  You’ll just be practising in the white water and you don’t need big waves or to go beyond waist depth at this stage
  • Be mindful of fellow water users and make sure you wear your leash to keep
  • Have fun!  This is the hardest part of your surfing journey, embrace the wipeout’s and enjoy the experience!
