Governance and Compliance Lead Vacancy

APPLICATIONS HAVE NOW CLOSED FOR THIS ROLE.

Governance and Compliance Lead

Surfing England is the sport’s National Governing Body (NGB), looking after all forms of wave riding from grass roots to Team England.    We run the UKs largest programme of surf events, accredit and affiliate almost 100 surf schools and clubs, deliver coaching qualifications and training, look after the talent pathway across multiple disciplines and much more.

With Olympic inclusion for shortboard and hopefully paralympic inclusion on the cards, the deployment of artificial waves across the country and well over 1m people getting involved every year surfing is a sport on the rise.  To keep pace with the changing needs of the sport we need a dynamic and progressive NGB that is equally at home on the beach working with the surfing community as it is in the boardroom securing public funds and inputting into national sports and health agendas.

As we start to work with new partners, like Sport England, we need to meet the highest standards of sports governance.  As such, we’re looking for someone who can help us develop good governance policies and procedures and ensure compliance with our legal and funding requirements.

Role and Responsibilities

Having completed a full governance review with external experts Governance Utd, this role will be focused on the implementation and management of our T3 compliant policies working across the team and board.

You will be a natural administrator and strong communicator as you play a vital role within the business maintaining high levels of compliance against the requirements of the code and driving improvements in how we work.  You will be able to spot opportunities for efficiencies and share good practice across the team.

You will be happy to tackle new challenges and to draft policies in a wide range of areas across the Surfing England remit.   As a small team there will be lots of opportunity to support different projects and work with different team members.  You will need to develop strong relationships across the team, especially with the Board and CEO.

Key areas of responsibility:

Board Support and AGM

  • Organising and delivering our Annual General Meeting and engaging our membership
  • Acting as company secretary for Surfing England and supporting our board and chair with the organisation and delivery of board meetings (overseeing minutes and actions)
  • Acting as secretary as needed for nominations and audit committees
  • Managing the board calendar, ensuring policy reviews and other board commitments are met in a timely manner

Governance and reporting

  • Managing and delivering our Governance Action plan to meet T3 of the code
  • The day to day delivery of our governance work, ensuring good standards of governance are met across the team
  • Working with external partners and providing reporting for specific projects and against code requirements

Community

  • Sharing governance best practice with our community of surf clubs
  • Ensuring our policies and procedures are easily available to those who need them
  • Over seeing the management of complaints notified to Surfing England

Qualifications, skills and abilities

You will need to be a natural organiser with good attention to detail and analytical skills.  You’ll be faced with a real variety of tasks, so it’s important you’re able to bring your skills and experience to bear on a range of different work.  You need to be self motivated and happy to tackle new tasks and problems where we don’t have existing organisational experience or capability.   Management will be output orientated, so you will have freedom in your approach and in your workload management.

Surfing England is a busy environment, working with a small team that are always on the go and delivering a large programme of work.  We are naturally self starters and highly motivated to do the best job we can for our surfers and the surfing community.  Caring about what we do and acting with integrity is crucial.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working in a governance related role, within sport working to the code or within a regulated industry where compliance is essential
  • Ability and demonstrable experience of writing policies and procedures and managing their implementation
  • Ideally a good working knowledge of the code for sports governance, but not essential

Personal Attributes and Skills

  • Positive energy, friendly and approachable
  • Enjoy being organised and take pride in attention to detail
  • Highly motivated and enjoy organising your own workload with an output orientated approach

We encourage and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.  We believe a more diverse line up makes for a happier surfing experience, and a more diverse team enables more informed and better decision making.
