Team England Junior Programme
Vacancy: Head Coach
Job Description
Surfing England
Surfing England is the sport’s National Governing Body (NGB), looking after all forms of wave riding, from community and club level to Team England’s most competitive surfers representing our country on the world stage. A major part of our remit is developing a talent pathway that is open and inclusive, supporting and nurturing the best talent in the county and giving our young surfers every opportunity to fulfil their potential.
British Surfing
Funded by UK Sport, GB Surfing is responsible for the delivery of surfing’s progression programme and the selection and management of Team GB. Working with the home nations, GB Surfing wants to support the development of effective talent pathways, giving our young surfers every opportunity to fulfil their potential and to create a competitive GB programme with the ambition of British Surfers qualifying for the 2028 and 2032 Olympics.
Role and Responsibilities
The head coach role is a crucial position within the Team England junior programme, setting the culture and ethos within the coaching team. You will also be a professional and inspirational role model for the young surfers in the training squad.
The role is co-funded by GB Surfing and you will work closely with the GB performance lead to ensure the Junior Programme is seamlessly integrated with the Progression Program. As head coach you will hold responsibilities across three key areas:

- Bringing in external expertise or facilities to leverage opportunities within the program
- Ensuring training and competition schedules are in place for Team (selected) athletes
- Managing the transition athletes, moving between the SE junior programme and the GB Surfing progression programme
- Working with the Team Manager to prepare for competitions including selection, competition and training plans
- Working with Surfing England and GB Surfing performance leads to continue developing and evolving the talent pathway, which will include how we work with the other home nation surfers and coaches
Coaching team management
- Supporting the development of the coaching team, exploring opportunities for professional development, and working with the wider coaching workforce across GB Surfing
- Gathering and sharing knowledge – technical aspects, scientific developments, research and any other areas that can contribute to our surfers performance and development
Contribution to the talent pathway
- Integrating the Surfing England Junior Programme with the GB Progression Programme to provide a seamless transition for developing surfers
- Helping to deliver the Surfing England Talent Plan, in particular exploring and creating opportunities for broadening the talent pathway
- Being committed to Surfing England’s EDI ambitions and being an ambassador for diversity and inclusion within the talent pathway
Qualifications, skills and abilities
This is the first step in bringing more support and paid roles into surfing’s talent pathway. Whoever fills this role will be breaking new ground, and it will require someone who can work flexibility, takes challenges in their stride and enjoys multi-tasking.
