After huge success in 2021, we return to The Wave, Bristol for the 2022 English Adaptive Surfing Open. The event will take place on Thursday 7th July, and we will see a full day’s surfing action. Surfers from breaks across the world are welcome to travel and compete, as we bring together the global surf community.
The Wave is the official high-performance training centre for Team England, and the Adaptive crew are often found shredding on the lake’s glassy waves. The Wave have also been instrumental in developing adaptive surfing in England, supporting Surfing England for the last 5 years to establish a contest which is now highly respected at global level.
The contest heats of the 2022 English Adaptive Surfing Open will take place on the Advanced setting at The Wave, and surfers will be scored on their rides on both the left and right side of the lake. Competition will take place between 10am and 7pm, with presentations to follow and a relaxed social gathering to end the day.
Entry Information
Entry will cost £40 per division.
As we move towards supporting the ISA’s drive for surfing to be included in the Paralympics, we will aim to run divisions more closely to the ISA’s 9 para surfing divisions. Divisions with low numbers may be combined into multiclass heats. Each surfer will be scored within their own class but may be in a heat with other classifications male and female. Heats are most likely to be combined male and female due to lake time/numbers.
For 2022, the Men’s and Women’s Open’s will not run as we move towards the ISA 9 Para Surfing Classes and will not have enough lake time.
Entry Open’s Thursday 26th May at 14:00pm. Entry closes Monday 27th June at 10.00am.
Please read the Event Format which forms the T&Cs of the Event. You must be familiar with the information in here ahead of entering. READ ME: 2022 English Adaptive Event Format 250522

Volunteering at the Adaptive Competition
We are looking to work with lots of volunteers for the Event – the whole competition is only possible with the generous help and support. We will be looking for in-water and on land volunteers to help with wetsuits, boards, in water safety, assisting surfers who require pushers/catchers, etc.
Volunteer registration is OPEN! Please read the info within the Event Format which has links to a google form. A huge thank you in advance.
Accommodation at The Wave
The Camp at The Wave provides the perfect option for surfers to stay, and the safari tents have been reserved for the competitors on the nights of Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th July. Please refer to the Event Format for more information about the tents and when booking opens. Make sure you get your booking in on time to not miss out!
Booking supported practise sessions and additional surfs (for surfers competing at the contest)
It is important when booking any additional surf sessions that surfers understand The Wave and its adaptive processes and support networks. The Wave are organising 2 private supported sessions on the advanced wave the day before. For booking other surf sessions, please read the Event Format which details how to book, and a unique discount code for surfers competing.
Adaptive Participation Experience (for surfers with little/no experience or first time surfing the wave
In 2021 a ‘Waikiki Participation Session’ was delivered during the event; unfortunately for 2022, due to lake timings this cannot be facilitated during the Adaptive Surfing Open day.
However, The Wave would like to raise awareness of their ‘Adaptive Surf Club’, taking place the evening before the competition. Any interested surfers are invited to take part in their ‘Adaptive Surf Club’ the evening before the event surfing at 7-8pm (arrival 5pm) on Wednesday 6th July.
Please see full info in the Event Format.
Friends/Family/Supporters attending the Event
The requirements from The Wave are that anyone attending the venue who is not a competitor, member of event staff, or volunteer, must book a spectator’s pass. These cost £2 per person and are bookable directly with The Wave.
We advise you to book these as soon as possible as it will be a busy day at The Wave. Click here.
