Members for Technical Panel

There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the growth and development of surfing’s National Governing Body as we strive to create a dynamic and forward-thinking organisation with the needs of the surfer and surfing community at the heart of all we do.

elite-junior-surfing-england

We see great coaching as a fundamental building block in the development of surfing, both as a competitive and lifestyle sport.  Through a substantial consultation with coaches, coach developers and surf schools, we created a new vision for surf coaching in England (See our review here) and we are embarking on the development of a series of Surfing England coaching awards.

As part of this process, Surfing England is delighted to be opening positions for a new Technical Panel, the aim of which is to input into, review and steer the design of the new series of Instructor/Coach Qualifications.

Surfing England will be tendering for experts to develop our new awards, who will then present to the technical panel which will provide critical peer review. This will ensure that we have a robust process and that we create the very best coaching awards and training.

We are seeking to recruit experienced coaches/trainers with a passion for coach development and for the standards and depth of instruction and coaching delivered at our surf schools.

Please note:  This is a voluntary role with a time commitment totalling roughly 5 days per year which includes Technical Panel meetings, along with related follow up with the Coaching & Qualifications Lead.

Meetings will be held in person at a suitable surf centre venue and additional follow-up review meetings will be held virtually. Travel, overnight and any other reasonable expenses will be paid. There is the potential for continued work for paid projects at commercial rates (In this case, you would be asked to step off the Technical Panel for the duration of the paid work to ensure no conflict of interest).

Please see our Terms of Reference for the Technical Panel

Please also read our 22/23 Coaching plan with the timeline for this collaborative project (showing all parties involved)

Skills and Experience

We are looking for panel members with high level expertise in a variety of surfing disciplines and a range of skills and experience that will contribute to the development of our coaching pathway, which may include:

  • Substantial working experience as a surf coach and specialist knowledge within at least one technical discipline (recreational, SUP, performance, adaptive etc)
  • High level of experience in water safety and delivery of training
  • Understanding and knowledge of the surf coaching awards framework, nationally and internationally
  • Ability to effectively communicate theory and review content with a sense of purpose linked to Surfing England’s mission, the vision for these qualifications and our values
  • Ability to collaborate strategically and to take responsibility as part of a team
  • Proven interpersonal, communication and people skills, an enquiring mind, and a positive attitude
  • A respect for and an appreciation of people’s differing views, welcoming challenge and debate.
